January is “Get Organised Month”

1st is commitment day. Similar to a new year resolution.

1st in 1958 the European Economic Community (Common Market) is formed today. In 1973 this is expanded when Great Britain joins. The European ideal is expanded further when in 1999 the common currency, the “euro”, is introduced although the notes and coins are not introduced until 2002.

4th in 1967 Donald Campbell dies while attempting to set a world speed record on Coniston Water when his Bluebird boat somersaults.

5th in 1818 the first regular trans-Atlantic shipping service starts between Liverpool and New York.

5th Last day of payroll month 9.

7th in 1714 the first patent for a typewriter is granted to Henry Mill.

9th House of Commons resumes.

10th the world’s first underground railway starts in 1863 running between Paddington and Farringdon in London.

10th The League of Nations comes into existence in 1920 as a result of the First World War. Then in 1946 the first meeting of the replacement organization The United Nations takes place.

12th the first landing of a Jumbo jet at Heathrow takes place in 1970.

13th The Labour party is formed in 1893 as “The Labour Representation Committee”.

18th The War of the Roses comes to an end by the marriage of Henry VII to the daughter of Edward IV in 1485 after 30 years of civil conflict.

20th in 1265 the first sitting of the English Parliament takes place in Westminster Hall.

20th 1945 sees the unrepeated fourth inauguration as President of the United States. The same date in 1981 Ronald Reagan is inaugurated as President for his first term.

21st The worlds first supersonic airline services start when Concorde opens the routes from London to Bahrain and Paris to Rio de Janeiro

22nd Payments to HMRC for payroll month 9 are due by today.

26th On this day in 1788 11 British ships with 778 convicts on board land at Sydney Harbour to set up a penal colony. This date is celebrated as Australia Day.

27th in 1926 John Logie Baird demonstrates television for the first time to the Royal institution.

28th Data Privacy day.

28th The first city in the world to be light by gas is London in 1807.

28th the space shuttle Challenger explodes 74 seconds after take off in 1986.

31st Self Assessment Tax Returns are due to be submitted by close of business today.
